Door County Voluntary Registry Program for
Propane Tanks and Distribution Systems
Purpose: This registry was prompted by the July 10th, 2006 Ellison Bay explosions that claimed the lives of two people and injured several others. It is believed that severed propane lines were a significant contributing factor, if not the sole cause of the explosion. The Door County Board of Supervisors approved a voluntary propane tank distribution systems registry program at their January 23, 2007 meeting. The intent of the program is to make information available regarding the existence and location of propane tanks and distribution systems, with the primary goal of lessening the potential for future loss of life, personal injury or property damage.
The voluntary registry program will allow people to submit information as to the location of propane tanks and distribution systems, particularly underground tanks and lines. Individuals and businesses planning to excavate the earth can then access the information from the Door County registry prior to beginning work.
Information Submittal: Click to obtain form for printing and submitting information on the location of propane tanks and distribution systems. Information should be submitted to:

Obtaining Information: Persons planning to engage in digging, blasting, excavating, or other underground construction activities are strongly encouraged to consult the voluntary registry before commencing work. Knowledge of the existence and location of propane tanks and distribution systems will enable such persons to locate any item buried or placed below ground or submerged under water without harm to themselves or endangering the public.
To view registered propane systems, go to Door County's Interactive Map of Registered Propane Systems.
From the Door County Propane Registry Map, select the first pull-down menu in the upper-left, "Locate Propane Systems". A propane system can be located by Address, Original Owner Name, or System ID. A new pull-down menu should appear below the original three that lists the systems per the selected field. For a selected propane system address, additional tabular information should appear to the left and the map should then zoom to its location. (If a system is not listed for a specific address, it indicates only that no propane system has been submitted for this site. Although none is registered, a propane system may still exist at a location.) Please review Disclaimer below, as Door County does not make any guarantees as to the accuracy or completeness of registry information.
Safety: Propane Safety and Education for the public are also important goals of this program.
Disclaimer: This registry is voluntary. Whether an owner provides the information, whether the information provided is accurate, and whether a person consults the registry before commencing to dig, blast, excavate, or begin other underground construction activities is beyond the control and knowledge of Door County. For this and other reasons, Door County does not assume responsibility and expressly disclaims liability for loss, damage, or expense arising out of the use or in any way connected with this registry.
