November DCIST Meeting & Featured Presentation:
‘Why Invasive Species Matter: The
Niagara Escarpment, Biodiversity and Ecological Integrity’
Monday November 9
2pm

Peninsula Room, County Government Building (first floor)
421 Nebraska Street
Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin

The November Meeting of the Door County Invasive Species Team will feature a question and answer presentation on the Niagara Escarpment.  An important geologic feature stretching from eastern Wisconsin through the U.P., Ontario and New York State, the Niagara Escarpment also defines a corridor of biological bounty.  The varied habitats of the ‘Great Arc’ are home to some of the greatest biodiversity in the Great Lakes region.  The Door Peninsula is the most prominent segment of the Niagara Escarpment in Wisconsin and is home to more rare species of plants and animals than anywhere else in the State.  Invasive species threaten the existence of such fragile species and upset thousands of years of ecological balance.

In March of this year, the Wisconsin State Legislature recognized the unique attributes of the Niagara Escarpment and unanimously declared 2010 ‘The Year of the Escarpment’ in Wisconsin (Assembly Joint Resolution 1).  Ecological consultant Bob Bultman will share a PowerPoint slide show put together by the Niagara Escarpment Resource Network (NERN).  The presentation illuminates the special attributes of the Niagara Escarpment corridor and connects the dots between natural beauty, ecological integrity and invasive plants and animals.

presenter bio:
Native to northeast Wisconsin, Bob Bultman spends as much time as he is able working and playing in the Great Out-of-Doors.  Bob studied Geology at UW-Madison and continues to observe and absorb the endless lessons of the Natural World.  Most of Bob’s environmental interests are encompassed in RestoreDoor - Ecologic Consulting and Restoration, his business that includes: education and outdoor experiential learning, invasive species control, woodlot management, habitat restoration plantings and natural landscaping.  He has been active with the Niagara Escarpment Resource Network (NERN) for several years and the Coordinator for the Door County Invasive Species Team since May 2006.

Relevant to permanent residents and visitors, this presentation is free and open to the public.

August DCIST Meeting -  featuring Best Management Practices of Shoreline and Wetland Management: Maintaining the good, minimizing the bad

Monday August 10, 2009

2pm

Crossroads At Big Creek

Create any disturbance in the natural world and invariably it is the weedy, aggressive species that move in quickly.  The low levels of Lake Michigan have exposed plenty of lakebed to the relatively rapid growth of vegetation.  Most of the vegetative growth on our shoreline is healthy and beneficial.  Unfortunately, many places have experienced the proliferation of invasive plants.  Without stewardship action, undesirable plants continue their biological invasion.

Join a panel of DCIST Team members including experts, agency staff and neighborhood leaders as they present overviews and summaries of their ongoing efforts to keep our various shoreline and wetland environments healthy and free of invasive weeds.  We will discuss regulatory aspects to shoreline and wetland management, Best Management Practices (BMPs) and learn about 2 new invasive plants to watch out for and eradicate before they get a foothold on your shoreline or in your wetland: lyme grass in dune environments and cirsium palustre (european swamp thistle) in wet woods and wet soil shoreline areas.

As always, this informational meeting is free and open to the public.  Questions?  Please contact the Door County invasive Species Team at 920.746.5955  or  dcist1@gmail.com.

Wild Parsnip Identification and Eradication Workparties

Tuesday July 7  &  Thursday July 9

9am - noon

Meet at the Pines II Tavern at 9 am

980 County DK (old Highway 57)

Gloves, long sleeves and long pants are required to deal with this plant.  The key to control is preventing it from seeding, which means getting the plant before the flowers mature.  Wild parsnip has a taproot that can be sliced with a shovel.  In soft soil or after a rain, whole plants can be pulled out.  If you are working around wild parsnip avoid getting the juice on your bare skin by wearing gloves, long sleeves, long pants etc.  If you suspect that you have gotten some of the juice on your skin wash the area thoroughly with soap before it is exposed to the sun to avoid the reaction.

Forest Beautification & Restoration at the Gibraltar Outdoor Classroom Site

Wednesday June 3, 2009

3:30 – 6pm

Gibraltar School, north parking lot near the tennis courts
Hwy 42
Fish Creek, Wisconsin

Last Fall, students at Gibraltar School collaborated with Peninsula State Park to clear exotic bush honeysuckle to prepare an outdoor classroom area.  The restoration project is off to a healthy start with lots more of the invasive shrub to remove.  The further we push into the pines away from the forest edges, the easier the work gets.  Join the Gibraltar Ecology Club, Friends of Peninsula State Park and the Door County Invasive Species Team to continue this important work.  Not everyone needs to feel comfortable using a saw or loppers – We need folks to drag brush too.  We do need adults to be present to apply the herbicide.

Meet in the north end of the Gibraltar School parking lot by the tennis courts.  Participants should dress for the weather and bring gloves.  Bring hands saws and loppers if you can.

Your local parks need you!!  Taking care of our parklands and public areas is more than just picking up the litter.  Many of our natural areas are experiencing the degrading affects of invasive plants and animals.  Invasive species are a kind of pollution that are not as easy to remove or control as candy wrappers and pop cans.  Invasive species are weedy and aggressive.  They tend to grow densely, choking out native species and reducing human access.  Some further diminish our park experience because they are thorny or poisonous.

Join the Door County Invasive Species Team and local volunteers to clear invasive shrubs and weeds from two community park areas.  Target species include: exotic bush honeysuckle, glossy buckthorn and japanese barberry.  Learn how to identify and control these invasive shrubs and other weeds as well as how to identify native plant species.  This stewardship knowledge is applicable to whichever neighborhood you live in.  Get some fresh air while helping keep our parks healthy.

DCIST and the Door Stewardship Alliance join forces to remove small scotch pines (and any exotic bush honeysuckle we find) from the Kangaroo Lake Preserve.  Scotch pine is just about the easiest non-native plant to remove --- Cut it low enough and there is no herbicide necessary.  Dress for the weather and bring work gloves.

Glossy Buckthorn Control Demonstrations

2 consecutive Fridays :

Friday October 3

and

Friday October 10

10am - noon

Crossroads At Big Creek

2041 Michigan Street

Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin

Glossy buckthorn, a woody invasive, has been spreading on the Crossroads grounds for years.  Now, concerned and active citizens are turning the tide and restoring the forest along Big Creek.

Why is exotic buckthorn a concern?  It's thick and unchecked growth chokes out native shrubs and plants.  When gobbled up by migrating birds, the ripe black fruit of both common and glossy buckthorn give the birds traveler's diarrhea.  The cramping and dehydration resulting from the digestive insult hinders birds on their long migration.

Come to Crossroads, learn how to properly identify and treat woody invasives like glossy buckthorn and exotic bush honeysuckle and help restore the land.
