What is an INVASIVE? An "invasive species" is defined as a species that is: 1) non-native, exotic or alien to the local ecosystem, 2) expresses aggressive growth and reproductive characteristics and 3) whose introduction causes or is likely to cause an adverse impact to economic, environmental and human health. Human actions are the primary means of invasive species introductions. The encroachment and invasion by aggressive, non-indigenous terrestrial and aquatic plant species into coastal habitats is a serious threat because they: o Decrease water and nutrients in soil as a result of monotypic vegetation o Lower aesthetic value of coastal areas. |

o Modify water and soil chemistry. o Damage fish habitat. o Impede fish migration and recreational opportunities. o Reduce light resources for native wildflowers, shading them out. o Lower species diversity and limit crucial habitat for threatened/endangered species. These species tend to grow aggressively in agricultural lands, home gardens, roadsides, and other disturbed sites. Some also possess noxious properties that cause allergic reactions or poisoning upon contact or consumption. The majority of invasive species have their origins in other countries, such as Europe or Asia. Although some equally aggressive invasive species come from other parts of North America.
